Algerian boxer Imane Khelif found herself at the center of controversy after her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, walked out of their match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, citing “severe pain” in her nose. This sudden exit made Khelif the automatic winner, but her previous disqualification from the 2023 world championships due to elevated testosterone levels has fueled debate over her participation.
Her father, Amar Khelif, defended his daughter, expressing pride: “Having such a daughter is an honor because she is a champion. She honored me.” He presented an “official-looking document” confirming her gender, emphasizing, “This document doesn’t lie.”
Carini later apologized, saying, “I’m sorry for my opponent… If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision.”
Khelif urged the public to stop bullying athletes, warning that it “can destroy people… spirit, and mind.”
Despite the controversy, Khelif remains focused on her Olympic goals, with her father’s support and her own resilience guiding her through the challenges.
