Susan Backlinie, the actress and stuntwoman best known as the first victim in Steven Spielberg’s *Jaws*, has passed away at 77. Her convention agent, Matthew Templeton, confirmed her passing and requested privacy for her family.
Backlinie gained fame at 28 when Spielberg recognized her exceptional swimming and diving abilities. Previously, she had worked with animals and performed as a mermaid in Florida. Spielberg, impressed by her unique skills, chose her for the iconic role in *Jaws*, stating, “I went to stunts to find the perfect stuntwoman, and Susan was up to the task.”
In a 2017 interview, Backlinie recalled Spielberg’s words before filming her famous scene: “When your scene is over, I want everyone under the seats with the bubble gum and popcorn.” Her portrayal of Chrissie Watkins in the opening moments of *Jaws* left a lasting impact on audiences.
Following her passing, tributes poured in from fans and colleagues. Jeffrey Kramer, a fellow cast member, praised her kindness, while fans remembered her role as “the most memorable tug on the leg in movie history.”
Susan Backlinie’s contribution to cinema, particularly her role in *Jaws*, has earned her a lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Susan.
